June 24th is Midsummer, the celebration of the summer solstice (longest day of the year), the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist (Mercury-Hermes, the Lord of Summer), Freemasonry’s Birthday (June 24th, 1717) and currently (2022) a fantastic astronomical alignment in the morning, eastern horizon (visible to the end of the month).

Da Vinci paints St. John the Baptist (ca. 1513) as Hermes or Mercury (qua the Hermetic, Alchemical androgyne), the divine messenger.

Mercurius, however, had several things in common with the Devil…It is of the essence of the transforming substance to be on the one hand extremely common, even contemptible (this is expressed in the series of attributes it shares with the Devil, such as serpent, dragon, raven, lion, basilisk, and eagle), but on the other hand to mean something of great value, not to say divine. – The Portable Jung, ed.
